The Great Recession and an economy that has remained sluggish have provided a daunting backdrop to would-be entrepreneurs over the past few years. But even with unemployment among young adults more than double that of the rest of the state’s work force, some ambitious twenty-somethings in Greater Portland have bucked the odds and started their own businesses.
PORTLAND – With Facebook’s initial public offering seen as a startup company’s dream, 13 entrepreneurial firms pitched their products Wednesday night, hoping to become the next big thing.
Upstart companies from across Maine presented their hopes, dreams and business plans to a panel of venture capitalists, business executives and professors at the University of Southern Maine’s Wishcamper Center. About 150 people attended the presentations.
PORTLAND — Bollywood dancing, Iranian folk dancers and a dance light show inspired by the indigenous Maori culture of New Zealand provided a festive atmosphere as more than 100 students from across the world celebrated their academic achievements.
