    UMPI students host 16th Fit and Fun Day

    Looking for something fun for your kids to do on a Saturday morning instead of watching cartoons? Fit and Fun Day returns to the University of Maine at Presque Isle for its 16th semi-annual event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 in Gentile Hall. Registration will begin at 9:15 a.m.; admission is free. Fit and Fun Day is designed to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles for local children. With the event being held in late October, organizers are adding another element of fun by giving participants the option to wear a costume during the event.

    Some of the hardest items to find on the trade floor at this year’s Potato Expo are potatoes.

    There are machines to sort them and clean them, chemicals to fertilize them and seeds to start them. But of the 149 exhibitors this week at Caesars Palace, only a few displays actually feature the potatoes themselves.

  • University of Maine to train students to stem high school drug use, bullying, depression

    ORONO, Maine — University of Maine researchers plan to investigate the merits of a new tool to battle depression, bullying and drug use in Maine’s high schools — the students themselves.

    On Dec. 5, University of Maine professors and graduate students will train nine Piscataquis Community Secondary School students and four from Blue Hill Harbor School to serve as peer counselors for their schools.

    The buzz surrounding massive open online courses, or MOOCs, has grown nearly as massive as the courses themselves. MOOCs are the new “thneeds,” the oddly-shaped items peddled by the Once-ler in The Lorax: Everybody seems to want one, even if nobody yet knows exactly what they are or what they mean.

    But amid all this MOOC mania, the University of Maine at Presque Isle is attempting a different kind of free online offering — one that would swap the scale of a MOOC for the high-touch experience of a conventional online course.

    Michael Sonntag, the provost, calls it a “LOOC”: a little open online course.

  • UMPI OpenU expands access to college-level courses for free

    PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle has put a new twist on a program offered at colleges such as Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which they say will help expand higher education to more people.

    And, the entire program is free to anyone who wants to sign up.

    Officials said the new UMPI OpenU project will allow learners of all ages to participate in online college courses for free, as long as they aren’t seeking college credit.

    The University of Maine’s Darling Marine Center in Walpole will offer a Natural Science Illustration Workshop July 16-20. The workshop is open to anyone who wants to illustrate a natural history journal with sketches or watercolor, hone observational skills and artistic talents to create scientifically accurate drawings, or bring art and science into the classroom.
